Performance Health and Wellbeing for Musicians

Raising awareness and breaking taboos, stigmas about physical and mental health in performing arts. Support, help and advice for professional musicians.

Project Approach

Educate to Prevent - Empowering Performers Through Knowledge

Through the Process project believes that education is the key to prevention. Our mission is to support the health and well-being of performers, particularly musicians, by bridging the gap between science and performing arts. We aim to raise awareness, challenge outdated perceptions, and provide practical tools for injury prevention, mental resilience, and long-term career sustainability.

Our approach model is rooted in collaboration, education, and storytelling:

Performance Consultation

Offering expert advice and guidance to musicians facing performance-related challenges such as Musiciansโ€™ Focal Dystonia, Performance Anxiety, and Biomechanical or Musculoskeletal issues.

Education & Research

Hosting workshops, webinars, and training on key topics including functional biomechanics, pedagogical strategies, physical and mental health, and performance psychology.

Storytelling & Awareness

Sharing interviews, podcasts, and personal experiences from artists and professionals across different disciplines, fostering open discussions about well-being in the arts.

Expanding the Concept of Performance

Recognizing that performance is not just about the stage but is present across multiple professions and high-pressure fields.

We are committed to breaking the stigma surrounding physical and mental health in the arts and ensuring that performers have access to the knowledge and support they need to thriveโ€”both artistically and personally.

Change begins with awareness. Prevention starts with education

Professional artists are also peak performance athletes, requiring mental and physical support during their artistic careers.

Interviews and Podcasts

The first Interview of Through the Process was with Alex Klein, Principal Oboe Emeritus from Chicago Symphony Orchestra and artistic director of the Festival Internacional de Musica de Santa Catarina.

An insightful story of one of the greatest musicians of history, sharing perceptions and perspectives about the artistic identity of a musician, purposes, experiences, success, adversities and resilience, after dealing with a performance condition called Musiciansโ€™ Focal Dystonia.

An example that โ€œOut of Adversity comes Opportunityโ€

"I don't practise because I have to, I practise because it gives me great pleasure doing it (...)"

(Mr. Alex Klein)

Educate to Prevent Workshops and Webinars

Education is the key to raising awareness and driving change.

These workshops bring together practitioners, therapists, and professionals from diverse fields, sharing their expertise on critical aspects of musiciansโ€™ health and well-being.

By equipping individuals with the right tools and knowledge, education empowers them to navigate the challenges of a performance career. Effective prevention starts with effective education.

Tiago Carvalho, Project Manager

Who am I?

Out of adversity comes opportunity

Iโ€™m a professional musician, Orchestra Stage & Project Manager, and performance science advocate from Portugal, dedicated to music performance, arts management, teaching, performance psychology, and performersโ€™ health and well-being.

My career began as a Bass Trombonist, but after being diagnosed with Musiciansโ€™ Focal Dystonia, I was forced to take a long-term break from performing. This challenge led me to explore the deeper connections between performance, health, and resilience.

I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance Science from the Royal College of Music, London, where I focused on the impact of health and well-being in the performing arts. Alongside my studies, I developed expertise in orchestral logistics and stage management, working as Stage Manager at the Philharmonia Orchestra, overseeing concerts and international tours.

I am currently Stage & Project Manager at the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and together with a great team, ensuring artistic excellence in production, planning, and logistical coordination.

Life is a series of choices by which the choices we make dictates the life we live
